So, it’s day three of the Interactive segment of South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. The clock jumped ahead during the night and the strangely empty hallways of the Austin Convention Center suggests that a lot of people forgot to change their clocks. Well, that doesn’t make sense; most of the participants are using smartphones (the overwhelming majority, iPhones; just an observation) so the empty halls must be attributed to the many late night parties – those and the loss of an hour’s sleep – yeah that makes sense.
My business partner, Tom and I are at the registrant’s lounge starting the day with carbs and coffee. Reflecting back over the last couple days I ask myself, “What is the primary value of attending an event like this?”
Well, one thing is that the experience has been incredibly validating. As a digital marketing company it is very encouraging to attend sessions facilitated by personnel from Google and Bing and get it straight from the horse’s mouth (Sorry Matt) that what we are doing to help our clients with SEO is spot on. Yeah, that’s good.
Certainly learning new online marketing strategies and ways to mash up social media, content development, and multimedia to create a diverse marketing platform was worth the trip and expense. But as good and as validating as the sessions have been, the biggest take away from SXSW has been the renewing of vision for Imagine That as a company and for me as an Internet marketer.
Being surrounded by the energy of some 60,000 people all passionate about what they do stirs the fire in my soul. It reminds me that we are bigger than the sum of our skills, and that we bring a lot to the table when it comes to helping our Summit County businesses in their online marketing efforts.
