High Performance Websites

At the beginning of October Imagine That were approached to put together a presentation for the Summit 70 Small Business Club. The Summit 70 Club is a great Summit County organization that host small business networking events and professional development meetings to help local  entrepreneurs  harness the power of connections, creativity and innovation to take their businesses to the next level. To find out more check out: Lake Dillon Theatre Small Business.

Here at Imagine That we love Small Businesses and startups partly because we still consider ourselves to be part of that brotherhood but mainly because we know that Colorado runs on small business’. According to the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce 97% of all employing businesses in Colorado are classified as small businesses. This is an incredible recommendation for the spirit of ingenuity and can do attitude in the Rocky Mountain State.

It is for this reason we are always delighted to help grow small businesses in our State and County. Obviously the best way for us to help is to be hired as you official digital marketing company and create a fully integrated cross platform strategy including SEO, Custom Website, Mobile Website and/or App and supported by a Social Media Strategy. If you are simply unable to budget for this sort of plan at present we still care about you and your business.

The presentation we put together for the Summit 70 club was crafted to give tips and advice to those businesses who recognixe the importance of  Online Marketing and wish to learn enough to get started on their own.  The running order of our presentation was: Branding Your Business Online – Define Your Brand, More Than a Logo, Brand Consistency, Brand Message. Design Best Practices for High Performing Websites – Usability, Conversions, Content Management, Growth of Mobile. Integrated Digital Marketing Strategy – SEO, Content Development, SEM, Social Media Marketing.

Overall we had an engaged audience with a pretty extensive question and answer format throughout. The presentation led to several new leads and even requests for us to present more regularly. The most rewarding thing was that a number of audience members came up at the end to tell us that the presentation really helped them understand how important SEO was or had a better grip on implementing a Social Media strategy for their business.

A couple weeks back, one of Imagine That’s clients, Ghost Ranch Dinning and Entertainment, had their grand opening. Part of the Imagine That team was their to help celebrate and enjoy the festivities. In attendance, was our good friend and lead creative designer Yvette Sirbu, alias “Energia”, my wonderful wife Wendy, alias “Woo” and yours truly “The Big Cheez”,  we had a blast!  The crowd was huge, the food was outstanding and the band “Miss the Boat” was fabulous. They even played a little Allman brothers, and you just can’t go wrong with that!!

Imagine That worked with the Ghost Ranch team over the last several months developing their rebranding strategy, redesigning and developing their website, and creating their SEO (search engine optimization) strategy. Check out the Ghost Ranch website and stay tuned for more exciting changes to their website and with Ghost Ranch in the near future! Website Findability; It’s More Than SEO

In 2005 information architect Peter Morville (findability.org) coined a term to describe the perfect fusion of all the elements of website development that create an excellent user experience: findability.

So what does findability look like?  First, findability is not search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is mostly an external consideration.  It’s main goal is getting traffic to a website.  Once it’s done that job, SEO is pretty much out of the loop.  SEO is part of findability, but it’s a small part.

Figure 1: Factors in FindabilityFigure 1: Factors in Findability

While this list is not exhaustive, it is a good place to start in evaluating the findability of your website.

Usability.  Conduct a usability test on your website.  You don’t need to pay thousands of dollars to have a professional usability expert come and conduct one for you. Do one yourself. Find a couple people not familiar with your business or website and pay them $20 to spend 30 minutes with you as you watch them use your website. You can find a sample usability test at http://sensible.com.

Credibility.  Content matters most on your site. Is your content authoritative? Relevant? If you sell goods online, is your online store free of marketing hype, flashing “BUY ME” buttons, etc?  Your credibility is directly related to the trust and confidence it builds in customers.

Desirability.  There are two considerations in desirability: 1) does your website’s look and feel promote a good user experience?  2) Does the content help users solve a problem? If a website’s design adds “noise” to the user experience desirability is diminished.  Too much “happy talk” – words that don’t answer the user’s questions – also diminishes desirability.

Accessibility.  Can the blind or severely sight-impaired use your website? Is it accessible to people with movement disabilities?  Accessibility is taking center stage more and more as new technologies are putting the Web in the hands of disabled users.  Some states have passed legislation establishing accessibility standards.

Information Architecture.  Is the information on your website organized in a logical way?  Is the navigation clear, intuitive? Does your site provide a sitemap and search feature to help users find what they want?

SEO.  Can people find you on the search engines?  Has your website been optimized as much as possible for the search engines so your site is easily indexed?  Along with SEO, does your site provide ways for users to share information with others?

There’s a lot to consider in website findability. Take it slow. Commit to making small, but on-going improvements to your site and you’ll find traffic increasing and more customers engaging your business.
